Málaga Airport to Marbella: Every Option Compared (2026)

Published 4 October 2026 · Marbella is 40–50 km west of AGP with no direct train — here is every way to cover it, ranked by price and pain.

Marbella is the Costa del Sol's biggest resort draw and its most awkward airport transfer: close enough that a taxi feels reasonable, far enough that the meter disagrees, and with no direct train. Here are all five options, honestly compared.

1. Avanza coach — the direct budget option (~45 min)

The best-kept secret of AGP arrivals: Avanza coaches leave from the forecourt right outside T3 arrivals and run direct to Marbella in about 45 minutes (continuing to Estepona, about 75 minutes). This is the cheapest direct option and, outside rush hour, nearly as fast as a taxi. The catch: coaches sell out in peak season, so book your seat online before you fly. Miss the last coach and the budget option disappears with it.

2. Train to Fuengirola + bus/taxi — the slow scenic route (1.5h+)

There is no train to Marbella. The Cercanías C1 ends at Fuengirola (about 34 minutes, roughly €2.70 from the airport station opposite T3). From Fuengirola you continue by local bus or taxi to Marbella. Total journey time is typically 1.5 hours or more with the change, so this only makes sense if you are pinching euros, your flight lands when the coaches are full, or you actually want to see Fuengirola.

3. Taxi — fast but metered (35–60 min)

Taxis queue outside T3 arrivals around the clock and the drive is 35–60 minutes depending on traffic. But remember: Málaga airport taxis are metered with no official fixed fares. The 40–50 km run will cost several times the ~€20 hop to the city centre. Ask for an estimate before departure, make sure the meter is running, and be wary of anyone inside the terminal offering "fixed price" rides — licensed taxis queue outside, not in the hall.

4. Private transfer — fixed price, zero thinking (35–60 min)

Pre-booked private transfers meet you in the T3 arrivals hall with a name board and drive you door to door for an agreed price fixed at booking — no meter anxiety, no queue, no timetable. For groups of 3–4 the per-person cost often beats the alternatives, and for late-night arrivals it is the least stressful option by a mile. Compare a couple of quotes; prices vary more than you would expect.

5. Car rental — if Marbella is just the start (35–60 min)

If you plan to explore — Puerto Banús, Ronda, the white villages — renting at the airport is usually cheaper than two taxi rides. Desks are in the T2 basement (S2 level); the drive to Marbella is a straightforward run west on the A-7 (toll-free) or the AP-7 toll motorway. Read our car rental guide first, especially the excess-insurance section.

Which should you pick?

On a budget, landing in daytime: the Avanza coach — book ahead. Arriving late or with lots of luggage: a pre-booked private transfer. Exploring the coast: car rental. The train: only if the coach is full or you enjoy the scenic route. And the taxi rank is fine — just know the meter is running and roughly what the run should cost.
